Mathematics Instruction MIAA350
Subquestion
How will I increase my mathematical knowledge and collaborate with my peers to develop a plan of implementation in our math course work?

Reflection
I have increased my mathematical knowledge throughout this program. I have been inspired and have many plans for next year. I want to take some time and plan lesson with other subject areas. With the change to Common Core I feel I will have more freedom to develop and elaborate my teaching. It is going to be a great deal of work but so much more rewarding. There are many ways to combine and enhance lessons across curriculum. I need only now to connect with my colleagues and plan lessons (Reeves, D., 2004).
Mathematics Instruction MIAA350 was a very eye opening and reassuring class. I have always thought of myself as a think outside the box type of teacher. I see math in different ways and I try to explain to my students my thinking. In this class I was exposed to many other methods of teaching students that will benefit students that just need a different method explained to them for understanding. Dr. Parker instructed me on different methods of solving problems and I had us solve a variety of problems using those methods. We could all solve the problems already, but by having us use the new methods we were better able to grasp the concepts. We used many hands on methods of learning that I will incorporate in my teaching.
For example, with first through third graders bundles of straws can be used for addition and subtraction. Just because I know how to solve a problem one way does not mean it is the only way. By exposing our students to different methods of problem solving and encouraging them to find other methods as well, we will help students perceive and increase their mathematical knowledge.
For Dr. Parker's class we comprised a binder containing all of the handouts, notes and examsfrom the class. There are multiple methods for soling multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and other mathematical concepts. It is a great resource that I will be using in the future.
